Azulejos Backgrounds | Comments (4)

Whilst we were on holiday in Portugal I took a few pictures of Azulejos, or hand-painted tiles. These are sometimes used to decorate the fronts of houses, and the look often hints at the Moorish past of Portugal.

The beauty of these designs is that they all make perfect repeating patterns, just the ticket for CSS background images.

All of the images are 200px square and in PSD format, feel free to make use of them in any way you see fit, a link or a tip of the hat would be nice if you use them in a live project.

hi there,
I lived in Lisbon for 3 years. I was willing to do the very same thing for a long time, I even bought one of these ‘rolling’ hand scanners (excuse my english) and roll it over all of those walls. But then I went to Marocco for a long time, and this idea was parked aside… or, better, reinvented. I shall scan every tile in north africa.

Later on I was working back in my service-sector, time-is-gold big city life. When I’m back from my travels I feel like I myself am CSS-designed. I was asked to design and build up a site for a funny project, and I thought “let’s try one of those tiles I photographed / scanned”.

THEY DIDNT WORK, and I don’t mean technically. They were just too real. I’ll check these of yours and tell you later on.

Inspiring a Sense of Ownership|(0)

Former colleague Mike West talks about how inspiring a team’s sense of ownership around a project is the key to great things happening: http://mikewest.org/2008/11/the-inspiration-of-ownership. Quality stuff.

VMware Server: Convert Fixed Disk-images to Growable|(0)

Quick tip if you ever want to convert from a fixed disk image to an expandable one then the following command should do it:

sudo vmware-vdiskmanager -r source.vmdk -t 0 expandable.vmdk

Just replace “source” and “expandable” with your disk image file names. For more on what vmware-vdiskmanager can do for you type vmware-vdiskmanager -h
