Web Standards Group

Web Standards Group London Meetup

Westminster University, New Cavendish Street campus

On Wednesday 28th Feb at 7pm, the third London based meeting for the Web Standards Group will take place at the Westminster University campus near Goodge Street station. This is thanks to support of the Department of Electronics, Communications and Software Engineering

The goal of these Web Standards Group events is to promote web-standards in such a way that attendees will go away having learnt something, or be inspired to create something great using web standards, whether they are seasoned standardistas or just starting out.

This month's Topic: Accessibility

This month we have three speakers who are some of the leading lights in the field of Web Accessibility. Accessibility is such an important part of Web Standards and it's vital that developers take responsibility for building accessible sites. This event is an opportunity to learn from some of the web industry's leading experts and come away with practical information that you can apply to your day to day work.

When is it?

The event will start at 7.00pm but we would suggest you attempt to arrive at the venue at 6.45pm so that you have plenty of time to find the lecture theatre and get a seat before the event starts.

How much is it?

This event is free, all that we ask is that you sign up to indicate that you will be attending This event is now sold out!

Ann McMeekin

Ann McMeekin is passionate about accessibility and good design, whether on the web or in the real world, and doesn't believe that one has to be sacrificed to achieve the other.

This is something she's argued for several years, both in her work (currently as a Web Accessibility Consultant for the RNIB, and previously as a web designer) and to anyone who'll sit still long enough to listen.

She blogs for work at http://www.rnib.org.uk/wacblog and for herself at http://www.pixeldiva.co.uk

Niqui Merret

Niqui Merret is a Flash developer, instructor and consultant. She is focused on accessibility for audiences with special needs. For the past few years she has researched user requirements, trying to understand better how users, with different needs, interact with computers and the Internet.

Back in South Africa, Niqui developed an eLearning HIV/AIDS product that is still used by many South African companies to educate staff. She also spent time in Mozambique where she assisted UNESCO in compiling an eLearning project on Malaria. In the UK she assisted in the set-up and training of a team to develop the eLearning material for the NHS Spine project.

Niqui believes that Flash can provide a rich experience for all users, regardless of ability. After being repeatedly told that Flash could never be accessible, her focus became to fight that very perception.

Niqui shares her thoughts on her blog - niquimerret.com

Mike Davies

Mike Davies works for Yahoo! Europe as a Web Developer with a focus on web accessibility. Online, he uses the moniker Isofarro and blogs about web accessibility and universality on isolani. His last project in his previous company (Legal & General) was presented at the launch of PAS 78 as a case study into the business benefits of web accessibility.
