Web Standards Group London Meetup

Westminster University, New Cavendish Street campus

On Wednesday 16th May at 7pm, the fourth London based meeting for the Web Standards Group will take place at the Westminster University campus near Goodge Street station. This is thanks to support of the Department of Electronics, Communications and Software Engineering

The goal of these events is to promote web-standards in such a way that attendees will go away having learnt something, or be inspired to create something great using web standards, whether they are seasoned standardistas or just starting out.

This Event's Topic: JavaScript

This month we have two speakers who are going to talk about the various facets of JavaScript including writing maintainable and accessible JavaScript. This event is an opportunity to learn from some of the web industry's leading experts and come away with practical information that you can apply to your day to day work.

When is it?

The event will start at 7.00pm but we would suggest you attempt to arrive at the venue at 6.45pm so that you have plenty of time to find the lecture theatre and get a seat before the event starts.

How much is it?

This event is free, all that we ask is that you sign up to indicate that you will be attending This event is now sold out!

Christian Heilmann - Of Bloat and Generic Code

How does code become unreadable and who is to blame when things are a nightmare to maintain? Maybe it is our approach and the desire to please everybody instead of looking at code in a more pragmatic fashion.

Christian Heilmann was born in Germany and worked for the Red Cross with a group of disabled people before entering the media as radio news caster and audio producer. Around 1997 he got bored of tubes and speakers and started developing for the web. Since then he worked on BMW, HP, McDonald's, etoys, Visit Britain and other web sites for several agencies and is currently employed by Yahoo! UK as lead web developer, standards evangelist and trainer.

Christian authored numerous articles for A List Apart, Thinkvitamin and Digital web and wrote "Beginning JavaScript with Dom Scripting and Ajax" for Apress. He co-authored "Web Accessibility" and "Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made Easy" for Friends of Ed.

Christian publishes his thoughts at Wait Till I Come and at icant.co.uk

Steve Faulkner - Demystifying Screen Readers

Understanding how some popular screen readers present content to the user and how this raises issues in relation to the use AJAX and other methods of updating content.

Steve Faulkner is Technical Director of TPG (Europe) and Founder of The Web Accessibility Tools Consortium.
