On Friday July 14th at 7pm, the first London based meeting for the Web Standards Group will take place at the City University campus near Angel Tube station.
I've been jealous of the Web Standards Group events that have been happening over in Australia for some time. So it's great to be able to announce the first UK based WSG event. The goal of these events is to promote web-standards in such a way that attendees will go away having learnt something, or be inspired to create something great using web standards, whether they are seasoned standardistas or just starting out.
Below is a map showing the location of the Northampton square campus. The nearest tube station is Angel station which is on the northern line. You can also see a marker showing the location of the Printworks in Clerkenwell. (Note the pub's website map link is inaccurate)

The event will start at 7.00pm but we would suggest you attempt to arrive at the venue at 6.30pm so that you have plenty of time to find the lecture theatre and get a seat before the event starts.
Tickets are £4.50 each. This is a non-profit making event and all of the proceeds are going to cover the cost of hiring the room and the audio-visual equipment. Click here to buy tickets below
Author, blogger and user experience designer Andy Budd, will discuss the history of the web standards movement, where we are today, and where we'll be heading in the next five years. More controversially, Andy will explain why he thinks web standards are no longer important, and what we should really be focussing our attentions on.
Andy Budd is a user experience designer and web standards developer living and working in Brighton, England. Andy is the Creative Director of Clearleft Ltd and author of the best selling book, "CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions". As well as being a regular speaker at international design conferences, workshops and training events, Andy runs SkillSwap.org and helped organise the UK’s first web 2.0 conference (www.dconstruct.org).
When he’s not building websites, Andy is a keen travel photographer. Never happier than when he’s diving some remote tropical atoll, Andy is also a qualified PADI dive instructor and retired shark wrangler.
Christian Heilmann is going to talk about tips, tricks and techniques for developing JavaScript that is easy to maintain, ready for accessibility and works together with CSS and XHTML instead of taking them over. Unobtrusive JavaScript does not only mean allowing any visitor to use a site, it also means that maintainers should not need to have to contact the developer to change the look and feel or even the functionality of your scripts. If you are happy to finally have moved all the look and feel of a web site from HTML into CSS, this is the next step to take in order to make web development quicker, more versatile and less time consuming. Create scripts that can be used, not scripts that mean more work.
Christian is author of “Beginning JavaScript with DOM scripting and Ajax” released in July and the online resources “Unobtrusive JavaScript” and “From DHTML to DOM scripting” and member of the WaSP DOM scripting task force. He currently works as a web developer for Yahoo in London.
There will be a gathering of geeks at the Printworks, Clerkenwell after the event. See the map above for details. We will gather there from 9.30pm. If you are going to be joining us in the pub it's important that you let me know by leaving a comment on the Muffin Research Blog.
