Amazon.com are now offering DRM free MP3 Downloads, you can buy a single track or whole albums and prices range from $0.99 per track and from $5.99 per album. This is really great to see and I really hope Apple feels the pressure from the competition.

Meh! As Stuart’s pointed out in the comments the service requires a US Billing address. Still I’ve no doubt this will be come available elsewhere in the future – Afterall iTunes started out that way.

    Bleedin’ US-only, though. Bah!

I’m in the Uk and used it fine – you just need to enter a US state and zip code. I searched Google for “zip code WY” to get a list of matching Wyoming zip codes. Hey presto, bargain 256KB DRM-free music downloads until the industry tells Amazon to close it to UK credit cards, like iTunes does (or the dollar gets more expensive to us Brits)

They don’t actually verify your address against your credit card, so just make one up!

A friend of mine recommends the following as your billing address:

    Mr. Steve Jobs
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
    408.996.1010

Insert a tab character in vim when expand tabs is on|(0)

I have vim set-up to use spaces in place of tabs. Sometimes you need to use an actual tab e.g. editing a Makefile. Now whilst it’s possible to change settings so that tabs are used for specific files, a quick tip to remember is to simply type in insert mode:

Ctrl+v tab

That is Ctrl and “V” and hit the tab key, et voila you’ve entered an actual tab.

GNU screen: open tab in current working directory|(1)

A nice trick for having screen open a new tab in the same directory as the one you’re currently in. To use it add it to your .screenrc

# Open new window in current dir.
bind c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"
bind ^c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"
