Web Standards Group London Meetup Update | 74 Comments

Posted in Events on 29th June 2006, 12:05 am by

Thanks to everyone who has already bought a ticket for the first Web Standards Group meetup taking place on 14th July at City University. Tickets have been going fairly steadily and there’s currently about 80 tickets left. As it’s coming up in two weeks from this friday, now would be a good time to get a ticket if you want to come along.

Also at this stage it would be a good idea to re-iterate that there are no tickets available on the door (due to the venue’s stipulations) so you do need to get a ticket in advance if you would like to attend. For more info see the WSG London mini-site.

Please be sure to be there promptly on the night as we will be starting off at 7pm sharp. This is so we have enough time for each presentation and to allow for questions at the end of each talk. To facilitate everyone getting in and seated by 7pm I would suggest getting to the venue for 6.30pm or thereabouts.

Good news is that Christian’s book Beginning JavaScript (with DOM Scripting and AJAX) should be just off the press in time for us to grab a couple of copies to give away on the night. We’ll also have some copies of Andy Budd’s CSS mastery and other Friends of ED titles to give away, so be sure to think up some good questions to ask the Andy and Christian at the end of each presentation.

I’m at the point of finalising somewhere to go after the event for a beer or two. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 possibilities, all of which are fairly close to the venue. As soon as I’ve sorted the details (should be sometime this by the end of this week) I will post more info on the WSG Meetup page. Watch this space for details.

To help with getting an idea for how many people will be coming to the pub, if you’re planning on socialising after the event please leave a comment below. Cheers!

Webstandards followed by beer. The non-geeks have no idea what they are missing… I’m sure I can manage a pint before I have to head back.

Count me in, and let’s hope they have space for all of us (or at least a large pavement outside to encamp on).

I wasn’t at the pub, as had to make sure I got the train home (mind you, if I’d known Andy was a neighbour I might have tried blagging a lift …)

I enjoyed the seminar itself, though! It was great to see the Faces Of The Gurus and to get a glimpse of my fellow UK developers :) I didn’t even realise there were such events in the UK.

Thank you for organising it, Stuart.
    Where will the photos be??

Thanks to Stuart for organising such a great event!

And a big thanks to Andy and Chris for such interesting presentations.

Only got to speak to a few people after the event (Hi Nigel, Steve, David and the Multimap guys :) ) but it was great to see such a large bunch of geeks having fun :)

Looking forward to the next one :)

Thanks for all the time and effort that went into the event, it was a good turn out, the presentations were thought provoking and the drinking (ouch – and damn the early times of the last trains back!).

I must say though whilst I agree with the premise of Andys’ presentation that we must get a grip over standards and realise there is room for ivory snow, I can’t agree that the “battle” has been won.

The reason for this is that it’s not that clients do not care about web standards (there are enough tick boxes on ITTs to show that it’s often a consideration), rather it’s clients and for companies choosing in-house HR that cannot tell between companies/candidates that do and do not work with standards. The web standards “battle” will not be won until there is a easy way for those that shouldn’t have to care about standards (clients), being able to tell apart companies/developers that do and do not adhere to them, or there is universal professional adoption.

Yo, is there a 2011 web standards meet?

GNU screen: open tab in current working directory|(1)

A nice trick for having screen open a new tab in the same directory as the one you’re currently in. To use it add it to your .screenrc

# Open new window in current dir.
bind c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"
bind ^c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"

Ubuntu: add-apt-repository: command not found|(3)

When you’re using a minimal Ubuntu install if you find the ‘add-apt-repository’ command is missing (it’s useful for adding PPAs and other repositories), then simply run:

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
