Web Standards Group London Meetup Update | Comments (74)
Posted in Events on 29th June 2006, 12:05 am by Stuart
Thanks to everyone who has already bought a ticket for the first Web Standards Group meetup taking place on 14th July at City University. Tickets have been going fairly steadily and there’s currently about 80 tickets left. As it’s coming up in two weeks from this friday, now would be a good time to get a ticket if you want to come along.
Also at this stage it would be a good idea to re-iterate that there are no tickets available on the door (due to the venue’s stipulations) so you do need to get a ticket in advance if you would like to attend. For more info see the WSG London mini-site.
Please be sure to be there promptly on the night as we will be starting off at 7pm sharp. This is so we have enough time for each presentation and to allow for questions at the end of each talk. To facilitate everyone getting in and seated by 7pm I would suggest getting to the venue for 6.30pm or thereabouts.
Good news is that Christian’s book Beginning JavaScript (with DOM Scripting and AJAX) should be just off the press in time for us to grab a couple of copies to give away on the night. We’ll also have some copies of Andy Budd’s CSS mastery and other Friends of ED titles to give away, so be sure to think up some good questions to ask the Andy and Christian at the end of each presentation.
I’m at the point of finalising somewhere to go after the event for a beer or two. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 possibilities, all of which are fairly close to the venue. As soon as I’ve sorted the details (should be sometime this by the end of this week) I will post more info on the WSG Meetup page. Watch this space for details.
To help with getting an idea for how many people will be coming to the pub, if you’re planning on socialising after the event please leave a comment below. Cheers!

Thanks for reminding me – I’ve not actually bought my girlfriend’s ticket yet. Will have to do that tomorrow when I get paid.
We should be socialising (it is date night, after all!) but I’m not sure how long for, since Becca starts work at 7.30am the next day. We’ll definitely be there for a drink or two though.
Roger that mate.
I am planning on
getting absolutely hammeredsocialising after the event. Please book me a position close to the bar yet with easy access to the bog!I request — nay, demand — my right to sit in a corner and pretend to be sociable.
I’d love to socialise afterwards but it depends on the venue – if it’s noisy I won’t be able to hear a thing and would unhappily have to give it a miss.
I’ll try to be sociable, and pretend not to get hammered.
but can you find a pub with a SimpleQuiz machine ?
I’ll be there, any excuse eh
Two seats for me, not that I personally require two seats you understand!
I’ll be delighted to join your merry band for a fine ale after the event. Count me in.
Ooh, what else am I going to do on a Friday night, of course I’ll be there.
Count me in, too. Looking forward to it!
‘ello ‘ello ‘ello. I don’t get the move venue thing? I was thinking it was in the same place all evening…?
@trovster: Well it would be in one place except for the University don’t have a bar. So we will be taking a short walk after the presentations to a large drinking establishment which can supply the necessary liquid refreshments!
Spend Friday evening in the company of socially inept web geeks? Count me and my mate in
Go on then.
I’ll be at the bar..
Delicious frosty beverages on a summers evening, you say?
I am intruiged by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your pamphlet.
(AKA Mine’s a pint of Guinness – see you at the bar)
Yes somewhere fairly quiet and not too smokey please! …
Beer good
Count me in for anything involving drinking.
In the fine tradition of alphomega (the company started over many beers) we never miss the chance of making fools of our selves, make room for two please.
I can confirm there will be a merry band of at least 4 girls who will definately be coming along afterwards. Julia? Is that you shouting for beer ?? hehe
I’ll be there for the beer
Wait, that’s my corner!
I’ll hopefully be there; I mean, you *are* paying for the drinks, right Stuart?
Yes to pub, you need to ask?
I’ll be there. Beer = fun.
Hi Stuart,
Would love to meet up for a beer afterwards… should be able to get a couple in before heading home on the last train back up to Leicester
I’m always up for the pub.
Sounds like fun, see you there
I could be persuaded. Very easily persuaded.
Yup, I’ll be there: it wouldn’t be a proper geek meet without drinking afterwards.
Go on then. Count me in…
“To alcohol! The cause of – and solution to – all of life’s problems.” Homer
You’ve twisted my arm
See you down the battle cruiser!
I’d like to have a drink with like-minded people; my wife may be there too.
Andy and I will be there and at the bar, but we have to travel back to Gloucester the same night.
Nadine
I will be coming to the drinks afterwards next Friday.
My arm is twisted too
Look forward to it! Just me myself and I.
I will be – sounds expensive though!!!!
two more for the bar
Count me in
Why not a quick drink sounds like fun
I hope to come for a drink or two. Hopefully I can drag my boss along too!
Yep, intending to go to the pub afterwards
Should be there for the pub as well.
I’m in
I dare say a quick pint may well be in order. Huzzah.
Yeh, I’ll be at the pub…
Sudsies, yes 2!
(“How American!”)
Count me, and my two colleagues in.
I’ll be there. Maybe with a friend.
Yes, I will be in as well.
yup pub sounds good
One more for the bar
I would be interested in going to the pub after the event.
Add me to the list please, I enjoy a good alcoholic beverage!
I’ll be at the bar
Webstandards followed by beer. The non-geeks have no idea what they are missing… I’m sure I can manage a pint before I have to head back.
Count me in, and let’s hope they have space for all of us (or at least a large pavement outside to encamp on).
Andy Budd and alcohol all in one night, this is just too much… Count me in!
bar_geek_count++;
1+ for geeky beers / beery geeks.
I’m In
I.will.be@the.bar
Yeah I will be along for a cold beer or two!
I’ll be the one in the hat
I’m in for a few.
I wasn’t at the pub, as had to make sure I got the train home (mind you, if I’d known Andy was a neighbour I might have tried blagging a lift …)
I enjoyed the seminar itself, though! It was great to see the Faces Of The Gurus and to get a glimpse of my fellow UK developers
I didn’t even realise there were such events in the UK.
Thank you for organising it, Stuart.
Where will the photos be??
Thanks to Stuart for organising such a great event!
And a big thanks to Andy and Chris for such interesting presentations.
Only got to speak to a few people after the event (Hi Nigel, Steve, David and the Multimap guys
) but it was great to see such a large bunch of geeks having fun
Looking forward to the next one
Phil
Thoroughly enjoyed it last night and a big thank you to Stuart for organising the event.
Thanks for all the time and effort that went into the event, it was a good turn out, the presentations were thought provoking and the drinking (ouch – and damn the early times of the last trains back!).
I must say though whilst I agree with the premise of Andys’ presentation that we must get a grip over standards and realise there is room for ivory snow, I can’t agree that the “battle” has been won.
The reason for this is that it’s not that clients do not care about web standards (there are enough tick boxes on ITTs to show that it’s often a consideration), rather it’s clients and for companies choosing in-house HR that cannot tell between companies/candidates that do and do not work with standards. The web standards “battle” will not be won until there is a easy way for those that shouldn’t have to care about standards (clients), being able to tell apart companies/developers that do and do not adhere to them, or there is universal professional adoption.
Yo, is there a 2011 web standards meet?
