hi, can someone please tell me how to install iterm2? I unzip the file and move iterm.app to the app folder then double click on the app and nothing happens. Please help me, I'm new to mac and this is getting frustrating.

I love screen, but recently I found byobu which gives screen tabs and a status bar (all inside your lovely screen environment). It is amazing... However, I have trouble switching tabs in Terminal, it works fine in iTerm though.

iTerm is very solid these days but has been surpassed in features by iTerm2, free software downloadable from iterm2.com. iTerm2 does split screens. Terminal.app does split screens & tabs too.

iTerm2 downloads and unzips as iTerm.app, which is irritating given that the original iTerm.app still works and you can have both on your Mac. Oh well, it's easy enough to rename iTerm2 before moving it to /Applications. If you have iTerm and iTerm2, the two apps will share profiles and preferences — even if you don't want them to.

On a busy network full of Macs running Bonjour, iTerm2 will take f.o.r.e.v.e.r to start up. Get into its preferences and uncheck the setting for "Add Bonjour hosts to Profiles".

Copy-on-select isn't a big loss for Mac users because we do a lot of highlight-then-drag-and-drop. You don't need to copy and paste text when you can drag it around and drop it on an editor window, into another terminal, or onto your Mail icon in the dock.

You could try using Visor, its a plugin for Terminal.app (uses SIMBL). It adds a pretty useful Quake style drop down terminal interface and also supports tabs.

I was hoping that you were going to come up with a better alternative than Terminal! I spend most of my time on a Linux workstation with KDE4's great Konsole app, and am so used to being able to deal with split screens and tabs, that it just hurts having to work on the Mac, which is my laptop.

Man, do I wish there was a way to run either konsole or gnome-terminal under OSX!

How can you stand the lack of copy-on-select with Terminal? It's driven me to iTerm, which is driving me nuts with intermittent crashing and allowing me to accidentally quit with command-Q.

I am a Linux -> Mac user, so I'm in search of less "pretty" and more "function" in most apps. I love the whole Mac experience, but the keyboard configuration, along with the lack of ability to change it, is driving me nutz.

I am completely satisfied with iTerm. Tabs, keybaord shortcuts work well, and... the "Home" key takes me to the beginning of the command I'm typing!

@tom: Set terminal prefs so that option(alt) + click will position the cursor. This is found in window setting / Emulation
