Regarding the comment about designers needing to be more than "purely graphical," I agree to some extent. Sure, understanding the possibilities and the limits in a given medium (in this case the Web) will help a designer do a better job. I think the collaboration and effective communication between specialists is the more important issue. 

An amazing designer teamed with an amazing technical expert (coder)  -- and a healthy give-and-take between the two -- will yield, in my opinion, something much greater than can be achieved by someone trying to understand it all. Jack of all trades, master of none, you know?

Having the "split" allows people to really develop a skill-set and/or talent. It is important to have specialization, but also an understanding of factors that shape or are shaped by one's specialty.</description>
