@media2006 has been announced together with a rather tasty new website with all the details. I was at @media2005 last year and I found it to be a really inspiring event. This year (provided I get my act together in time) I will definitely be going.

As a change to last year’s agenda, @media2006 will feature two streams so that delegates can pick which presentations are most relevant to them. Having taken a look at the program I’ve realised that I am going to need to clone myself in advance of the conference so that I don’t have to make any difficult decisions.

If you’re not able to make it to SXSWi and you live in the UK or not so far away then you’d be mad to miss out on @media2006. Get yourself registered as soon as possible as it’s bound to be popular.

Any word on this cloning technique? I was imagining watching one of the presentations with one eye (and ear) and using my other faculties to watch a laptop screen with the other.

The laptop screen would be connected, through the conference WiFi (there is going to be one right?), to someone with a web cam in the front row of the other talk. I’m thinking that might need some practice to get anything other than a headache though.

@Gareth: Yes that would most likely induce a headache particularly the day after one of the many social events! Great idea though.

GNU screen: open tab in current working directory|(1)

A nice trick for having screen open a new tab in the same directory as the one you’re currently in. To use it add it to your .screenrc

# Open new window in current dir.
bind c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"
bind ^c stuff "screen -X chdir \$PWD;screen^M"

Ubuntu: add-apt-repository: command not found|(2)

When you’re using a minimal Ubuntu install if you find the ‘add-apt-repository’ command is missing (it’s useful for adding PPAs and other repositories), then simply run:

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
