Firefox Rendering fixed | Comments (0)

Posted in Browsers on 24th May 2004, 7:02 pm by Stuart

Whilst I was designing this site I noticed something strange about the rendering in FireFox of all of the pages with the right hand sidebar. Sometimes the left and right edges were left out until you moved the page up or down. As I have explained on the homepage it turned out that that it was the user.js preference file. Following the advice on the tips and tricks page on the FireFox Help site, i had added a line that looks like this:

// This one makes a huge difference. Last value in// milliseconds (default is 250)user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);

This is stated to make the browser load faster as the default of 250 milliseconds is to allow a pause for data to load. I then changed it back to the default like so:

// This one makes a huge difference. Last value in// milliseconds (default is 250)user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 250);

Now the browser is given enought time to render the page correctly. Whilst in most cases I have not experienced any issues with this particular mod; I have found that the problem tends to be present in mainly XHTML CSS sites.

Note: if you wish to experiment with the user.js file it is found in your profile directory. See here for further instructions.

Using Loggerhead with mod_wsgi|(0)

Here’s a post I wrote over on the Project Fondue Blog about our use of Loggerhead with mod_wsgi under Apache. Loggerhead is the rather nice branch viewer for bazaar branches as used on Launchpad.net.

If you’re not already subscribed to the Project Fondue blog feed then I can recommend it, as there should be some interesting posts coming out of there in the coming months (yes I’m unashamedly biased!).

Ubuntu: Turn off changing workspace with mouse wheel|(1)

I found the changing with the workspace with the mouse wheel really annoying. To disable it go to System => Preferences => CompizConfig (available if the compizconfig-settings-manager package is installed) and uncheck “Viewport Switcher” which is under the “Desktop” heading.
